Philosophy and Background

A gifted and passionate artist in her own right, Furchgott has been a popular Core Instructor of Drawing, Acrylic Painting, and Soft Pastel at Seattle's Gage Academy of Fine Art since 1999, providing a solid base of instruction to many thousands of students over the years, and inspiring many to continue on with art as a career.

Starting in 2013 Furchgott also established several ongoing Artist Critique Groups meeting monthly in her home studio, where advanced students and emerging and established artists come together to find community, mentorship, inspiration, and to share honest but supportive critiques of their developing work and artistic process.

A professional artist for over 40 years and the recipient of an Honors Degree in Art History from Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Furchgott brings seasoned practical experience, a broad understanding of art history, and a continuing creative excitement and questioning mind both to her own artistic process, and to her work in the classroom and as Mentor for her fellow artists.

For additional information on studio events, private classes, and other teaching and mentorship opportunities, please contact me at tfurchgott@gmail.com.

I learn as much, if not more, from my students as they learn from me. The true wonder of the creative process is that it never ends, there is always something more to learn, something new to try, some new beauty to appreciate. Learner’s mind is beginner’s mind for all of us.

Mentorship

Interested in joining one of my ongoing Critique Groups  for emerging and established artists, or finding out about individual mentorship opportunities? I’d love to hear from you!

Terry is the most careful, most observant giver of critiques that I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with a few. She reads a painting carefully and gives a full response, both regarding details (edges, value changes, drawing issues, color issues) and regarding the big picture, the overall impact of a work.  She asks, “what do you want this painting to do?”  She is an expert draftsman and colorist, which is evident in her own work, but she’s able to appreciate and respond to work that is completely different from her own.  Her critiques inspire me to keep working, do more and do better.
